Rather than showing combat, this 1943 photograph by Sgt. John Bushemi records a stream crossing on Arundel or Sagekarsa Island in the New Georgia group of the Solomon Islands, where American forces were operating against Japanese positions. The campaign took place in a landscape of dense jungle, swampy ground, and fast-moving streams that slowed every movement of troops and supplies. Its subject is the routine, physically demanding work of getting men across difficult terrain, which was as much a part of the Pacific war as the fighting itself.
