Cook's arrival in the Sandwich Islands in January 1778 is the moment this print revisits, showing islanders presenting an offering to the British navigator, whom they received as a visiting chief or deity. Europeans of the period often read such ceremonies through their own assumptions. Cook's stay ended in February 1779, when he was killed at Kealakekua Bay after a dispute over a stolen boat. The record gives no date or artist, so the print is best understood as a later European rendering of a Pacific encounter, one the Library reproduced in its 1975 *Viewpoints* selection.
