Few photographs of the early Soviet state place a single leader so squarely in front of its army as this one, which shows Lev Trotsky reviewing troops in Red Square. As People's Commissar for War, Trotsky was the central figure in building the Red Army during the Russian Civil War, and the scene reflects how quickly the new government turned Moscow's central square into a stage for revolutionary ceremony after the city became the Soviet capital in March 1918. The record dates the print only tentatively to 1918, so the exact occasion is uncertain, but the image captures a moment when the Bolsheviks were still defining the military and symbolic foundations of their state.
