The name on this label, Red Cloud, belonged to the Oglala Lakota leader (1822–1909), who by 1872 was one of the best-known Native American figures in the United States. He had led resistance to the Bozeman Trail forts during Red Cloud's War (1866–1868) and then signed the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868. Cincinnati's Strobridge & Co. produced this chromolithograph in 1872 for tobacco packaging, a trade that often borrowed the names and images of famous people to sell products. The label's Chicago distributors and copyright entry, recorded in the print's notes, show how such commercial art moved through the national market.
