Named for Pocahontas, the Powhatan woman who lived in early Virginia and died in 1617, this chromolithograph was designed to sell a brand of chewing tobacco rather than to record her life. The Hatch Lithograph Company of New York printed it for Harris, Beebe & Co., and the catalog gives a date of 1868. Chromolithography, a color printing method that became cheap and popular in the 1860s, made such eye-catching labels possible. The record also notes a U.S. Copyright Office registration, which protected commercial designs like this one. Images of Native people were common on tobacco packaging of the period, and this label shows how a historical figure could be turned into a marketing emblem.
