Labeled "Rivals," this chewing tobacco label pairs a Cincinnati tobacco maker, Spence Brothers and Co., with a bison-hunting scene, a subject that tied the product to the frontier sport of the day. The label was printed in color by Strobridge & Co., one of Cincinnati's leading lithography firms, which produced many tobacco labels in this period. Around 1872, the hide trade was booming and bison herds on the Great Plains were being hunted at a rapid pace, so the image reflects a moment when the hunt was a popular subject in American print culture.
