A color lithograph of Yosemite Valley, dated about 1872, stands apart on a board of tobacco material because its scenic subject was used to advertise a product. The valley's granite walls and waterfalls drew wide attention after Congress set the area aside for public use in 1864, and its views became popular with artists and printmakers. The print bears the name John T. Hancock of Dubuque, Iowa, is lithographed by Donaldson & Elmes of Cincinnati, and carries a copyright line in the name of Allen & Ellis, which ties it to the tobacco trade. Worth noticing is how the landscape is presented as a dignified, uplifting view, with the commercial message kept in the background.
