Theodore Roosevelt and naturalist John Muir stand together on Glacier Point, high above Yosemite Valley, in this 1903 image, which was later issued as an unmounted stereograph card. The trip was a three-day camping excursion that Roosevelt, then president, took with Muir in May 1903, and the two men spent much of it talking about preserving wild country. Their conversations helped lead to federal protection for Yosemite, and the picture records a moment when the presidency and the early conservation movement were working in close step.
