Glacier Point is a granite promontory that rises roughly 3,200 feet above the floor of Yosemite Valley, and this 1902 view of its cliffs shows the sheer rock that made the spot so striking to visitors. By then the valley had been under California's protection since 1864, and it became part of Yosemite National Park in 1890. Glacier Point drew tourists who reached it by horseback or stage, and it offered one of the most famous vistas in the Sierra Nevada. The record also lists the name Bret Harte, which is worth noting for researchers, though the catalog entry does not clearly establish that link.
