Glacier Point, the granite overlook rising roughly 3,200 feet above the floor of Yosemite Valley, is the subject here, and this stereograph catches it from the valley side in 1879. Carleton Watkins made the original negatives, and this card belongs to his New Series of Pacific Coast Views, which was published by William I. Marshall in San Francisco. Stereo cards like this were sold by the thousands to parlors across the country, letting viewers see the valley's sheer walls in three dimensions long before most of them would ever travel west. The card's catalog entry dates the view to 1870 in its subject heading, a reminder that Watkins's negatives were often reissued for years after he first made them.
