Glacier Point, which the title gives as 3,201 feet, is a granite promontory on the south rim of Yosemite Valley, with a sheer drop to the valley floor and a direct view across to Half Dome. Taber, a San Francisco photographer, built his reputation documenting Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada in the 1870s and 1880s, when the valley was becoming a major destination for visitors arriving by stage and horseback. The print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, a step that helped photographers protect their views from being copied. Its cliff-edge vantage shows why the point drew so many visitors.
