Glacier Point rises roughly 3,200 feet above the floor of Yosemite Valley, and this photochrom captures the view looking out from its lip across the valley. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued photochrom prints of American scenery around 1899, worked from a Swiss process that layered hand-prepared color stones over a black-and-white photographic base, giving the cliffs and meadows a painted, saturated look. Glacier Point was a popular stop for early tourists, who reached it by stagecoach and on foot. The print was registered for copyright and later deposited, which is why the record carries its number and a 1949 accession date.
