Riders on horseback fill the foreground of this view, which the record places on the Mariposa trail, one of the routes travelers used to reach Yosemite Valley before railroads served the region. Andrew Melrose painted the scene, and the London firm Raphael Tuck & Sons issued it as a color lithograph around 1887, when visitors were increasingly drawn to the valley's granite walls and waterfalls. Congress had granted the valley to California for public use in 1864, and it became a national park in 1890, so the print captures the place as tourism was taking shape. Its London publisher also shows how Yosemite's scenery was marketed to audiences far from the American West.
