Few trails into Yosemite Valley were as old as the Mariposa Trail, the route that carried early visitors down from the south and that this card names directly. By 1879 the valley had been a state grant for about fifteen years, and travelers who could not make the trip themselves bought stereo cards like this one to see its cliffs and meadows through a viewer. The card belongs to Watkins' New Series of Pacific Coast views, with the publisher listed as William I. Marshall, who sold many of Carleton Watkins' Yosemite photographs. Its two slightly offset images give the scene a sense of depth that a flat print cannot.
