Looking down on Yosemite Valley from the Mariposa trail gives a wide view of the valley floor and the granite walls that rise above it, a vantage that many early visitors took as their first glimpse of the place. Yosemite was set aside by Congress in 1864, the first time the federal government protected a natural landscape for public use, and images like this one helped build national interest in the valley. Pictures taken from trail overlooks such as this were often made to show the scale of the cliffs and waterfalls, which were hard to convey in words alone. The view remains one of the most recognizable in the American West.
