Taken from the Coulterville Trail, one of the routes leading from Mariposa County toward Yosemite Valley, this view presents the valley as seen from the trail. The Library holds only one half of a stereograph pair, issued in the Gems of California Scenery series as number 1102. Published in the 1860s, when the state had recently been granted the valley for preservation and visitors were only beginning to arrive, such views brought the Sierra to people who would never make the trip. Some details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
