The Merced River near the bridge in Yosemite Valley, Mariposa County, is the subject of this 1866 view. Only one half of its stereographic pair is held by the Library, and the caption card, listed as number 1122 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, contains information that has not been independently verified. Congress had set the valley aside for public use in 1864, and photographers soon made it one of the most sought-after subjects in the state. Stereographs like this one were sold to travelers and armchair viewers who wanted to see the landscape through a viewer without making the journey.
