The Three Brothers is a cluster of granite summits that rises above the south wall of Yosemite Valley, and the caption gives its height as 4,000 feet. This print, numbered 1107 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, is only one half of a matched pair made for viewing through a stereoscope, which gives the scene a sense of depth. Its albumen process, a silver print on paper coated with egg white, was the standard photographic method of the 1860s. Congress had set aside the valley as a protected grant in 1864, and views like this one helped bring images of the place to eastern audiences.
