The caption on this albumen print names the South Dome, a granite face in Yosemite Valley that the card gives as 6,000 feet high, a figure the record itself flags as unverified. Its title and series number, Gems of California Scenery no. 1115, show it was sold as a stereograph, a card printed to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The Library holds only one half of the original pair. The image dates to about 1866, a few years after Congress set aside Yosemite Valley for public use in 1864, when stereo views of the valley were among the most popular ways Americans saw the Sierra Nevada.
