The caption card for this albumen stereograph gives the height of Yosemite Fall as 2,634 feet and describes a near view of the cascade in Yosemite Valley, Mariposa County, though that figure is recorded as unverified. The picture dates to 1866, two years after Abraham Lincoln signed the 1864 act that granted the valley to California for public use, when visitors were just beginning to treat the falls as a national curiosity. The Library holds only one half of the original stereo pair, so the scene appears without the second image that would have given it depth.
