Cathedral Rocks rises above the floor of Yosemite Valley in Mariposa County, and this albumen stereograph captures it as photographers and viewers of the 1860s would have first encountered it. The Library of Congress holds only one half of the original pair, which was issued as part of the Gems of California Scenery series, numbered 1104 on the caption card. Carleton Watkins and other photographers working in the valley during this decade made such views for a public eager to see the Sierra wonders that had only recently drawn wide attention. Stereographs like this one were viewed through a hand-held lens, so the two slightly offset images merged into a single sense of depth along the granite cliffs.
