El Capitan, the sheer granite monolith labeled here with its Native name, Tu-tock-ah-nu-la, rises above Yosemite Valley in this 1866 stereograph. Published two years after Congress set the valley aside for public use, the card helped carry images of the landscape to eastern parlors, where viewers used a lens to see the rock in depth. The Library holds only one half of the original pair, so the full three-dimensional effect is not preserved here.
