Yosemite Falls, given here as 2,630 feet, was already one of the best-known sights in Yosemite Valley when this card was issued in 1871. Its stereoscopic format placed two nearly identical images side by side, so a viewer using a stereoscope saw the valley with apparent depth, a popular form of home entertainment at the time. The card belongs to the Watkins New Series of Yosemite and Pacific Coast views, published by William I. Marshall, and reflects the period's strong demand for scenic images of the West. The height in the title follows the measurements of its day, and modern surveys give a somewhat lower figure.
