Yosemite Falls, which this card puts at 2,630 feet, tumbles from the valley rim into the granite basin of Yosemite Valley in Mariposa County. The card belongs to the Watkins Pacific Coast series, named for photographer Carleton Watkins, whose views of the valley circulated widely after Congress set the valley aside in 1864. Published by William I. Marshall, cards like this were meant for a stereoscope, so the falls appeared to stand out in depth in a parlor. The valley's sheer walls frame the cascade and give a sense of its scale.
