The granite domes rising above Yosemite Valley in Mariposa County were among the most photographed landforms in the West, and this stereo card shows them from the valley floor. The mount credits the view to Watkins, almost certainly the San Francisco photographer Carleton Watkins, whose early 1860s trips produced some of the first large views of the valley. Stereo cards like this were sold in great numbers, so they brought the valley's scenery into parlors across the country. Federal protection for Yosemite followed in 1864, and images like this one helped build the public interest behind it.
