Taken from the Mariposa Trail, this stereograph looks into Yosemite Valley from the route that carried many nineteenth-century visitors in from Mariposa County. It belongs to the Watkins Pacific Coast series and is numbered 1136 on the card, issued in 1871 by publisher William I. Marshall. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two slightly different exposures fuse into a single three-dimensional scene of granite walls and valley floor. Yosemite stereoviews like this one were among the most popular picture-card souvenirs of the 1870s, helping spread the valley's image across the country.
