The view looks into Yosemite Valley from the Mariposa Trail, the route that approached the valley from the south through Mariposa County, California. Carleton Watkins's Pacific Coast series, published by William I. Marshall, made Yosemite's granite walls and waterfalls familiar to people who would never make the journey. Its albumen stereo format was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene depth and made the valley feel close to the viewer. Cards like this one were popular in American parlors in the 1870s, when Yosemite was becoming a national symbol of wild scenery.
