Yosemite Falls, the towering cascade that drops from the valley's north wall, is the subject of this instantaneous view, a quick exposure that freezes the rushing water. The card dates to 1869, five years after President Lincoln signed the 1864 grant that set aside Yosemite Valley for public use. Part of the Pacific Coast Views series, it was made for parlor stereoscopes, which let viewers see the West's wonders without leaving home.
