From the rim of Sentinel Dome, a granite summit on the south side of the valley, this 1861 stereograph looks across to Yosemite Falls, which the card's title identifies. The mount is stamped "Watkins Pacific Coast," linking the image to Carleton Watkins, the San Francisco photographer whose large-format views did much to make Yosemite known to eastern audiences. Stereo cards like this were sold in quantity and viewed through a hand stereoscope, which gave the falls and cliffs a sense of depth and scale. The card also bears the name of Marian S. Carson, a collector whose ownership is recorded on the mount.
