Sentinel Rock, a granite face rising above the floor of Yosemite Valley in Mariposa County, is the subject here, and the caption card gives its height as 3,270 feet, a figure that has not been independently verified. This albumen print is one half of a stereographic pair, issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series as number 1110 and published around 1866. Stereoviews like this were widely sold in the 1860s, when Yosemite's cliffs and waterfalls drew great public interest after the valley was set aside by Congress in 1864. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two images merged into a single three-dimensional scene.
