Vernal Fall, a 317-foot waterfall on the Merced River, is the subject here, shown from a close vantage at its crest rather than from the valley floor where most visitors stood. The stereograph was published around 1866 as part of the Gems of California Scenery series, and this print survives only as one half of the original stereo pair. Yosemite Valley had become a popular destination for photographers and tourists after the federal government set it aside for public use in 1864, and albumen views like this one helped carry images of the valley to eastern audiences through parlor stereoscopes. The caption card is recorded as unverified, so details of the exact viewpoint should be read with that in mind.
