From a vantage near the top of South Dome, this stereograph looks east toward Clouds' Rest, a granite summit that rises beyond the Yosemite high country, with the trees of the valley in the foreground. Thomas Houseworth & Co. of San Francisco issued the card around 1870, when the firm was one of the main publishers of Yosemite views for travelers and armchair tourists. Its two slightly offset images were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave the granite domes and the depth of the valley a three-dimensional presence. The card's albumen print, catalogued as number 1665, shows how the valley's dramatic scenery was packaged for home viewing in the years after it was set aside as a state park.
