Nevada Fall, which drops about 594 feet in its main plunge, is the waterfall named in this stereograph's title, and the view pairs it with Cap of Liberty, the rounded granite dome that rises above the Merced River gorge. Thomas Houseworth & Co. of San Francisco issued this card around 1872 as part of a numbered series, one of many stereo views that carried Yosemite's scenery to parlors across the country. Stereographs like this were viewed through a hand-held lens, which gave the cliffs and falls a sense of depth that a flat print could not. Looking closely, you can see how the thin ribbon of water contrasts with the massive stone walls around it.
