Yosemite Fall, seen at sunrise from the opposite side of the valley, is what sets this card apart from other valley views. William I. Marshall issued it in 1870 as No. 1221 in his series of Yosemite Valley scenes, and its paired images would have given a parlor viewer an apparent sense of depth in the granite cliffs. The period mattered too. Congress had granted Yosemite to the state of California in 1864, and the valley was attracting more visitors and photographers, so cards like this one carried its scenery far beyond the West.
