Yosemite Fall, which the caption gives as 2,634 feet high, is shown from the summit of Sentinel Dome, a granite dome on the south rim of Yosemite Valley. Viewed from that height, the fall and the valley below read as one broad landscape, a vantage that made Yosemite's scale easy to grasp for viewers far away. This stereograph was issued in 1870, when the valley was drawing growing numbers of tourists and photographers. Marshall's series of Yosemite views was sold as paired images that gave a three-dimensional effect when viewed through a parlor stereoscope.
