Yosemite Fall, at 2,634 feet, is the subject here, seen from the vantage of the Glacier Cascade, a detail that places the viewer on the rocky slope rather than on the valley floor. The card is an albumen stereograph from 1870, issued as number 1223 in a series of Yosemite Valley views published by William Isaac Marshall, who sold scenes like this to visitors and armchair travelers in the decades after the valley was set aside as a protected grant in 1864. Stereo cards such as this were viewed through a hand stereoscope, so the paired images gave the falls and granite walls a sense of depth that a flat print could not. The card was also registered for copyright, a common step for commercial photographers of the period.
