Yosemite Fall, which the title gives as 2,634 feet high, is the subject of this 1870 stereograph card, shot from a vantage point above Sentinel House, the hotel that stood near the valley floor. Stereoviews like this were sold in sets, and this one is number 1224 in a series of California views of Yosemite Valley issued by the publisher William Isaac Marshall. Viewed through a stereoscope, the paired images gave the waterfall and surrounding granite a sense of depth that flat photographs could not, which helped make Yosemite a national attraction in the years after it was set aside by Congress in 1864.
