Yosemite Falls, which the card gives as 2,634 feet high, is the subject here, seen from the vantage of Glacier Point on the valley's rim. Stereographs like this one were sold in large numbers in the 1870s, and this card belongs to a numbered series of Yosemite Valley views issued by the publisher William I. Marshall. Yosemite had only recently drawn national attention: it had been set aside by Congress as a protected grant in 1864, and by 1870 travelers were arriving by stagecoach to see its waterfalls and granite walls. Looking at the card through a stereoscope gave the viewer a sense of depth across the valley floor and the falls.
