Little Yosemite Valley, the meadowed basin above Nevada Fall on the Merced River, is the subject here, seen from the granite dome called Cap of Liberty, which is now known as Liberty Cap. The card was issued in 1870 as No. 1195 in a series of Yosemite views, and its photographer, listed as M. Thum (Mandeville), was one of many who sold such scenes to a public eager for images of the valley after Congress set it aside as a state grant in 1864. Stereograph cards like this were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset photographs into a single image with depth.
