The hotel shown here was run by James Hutchings, an early promoter of Yosemite whose name it carries, and it served visitors who came to the valley as tourism grew after California set the valley aside as a state grant in 1864. Stereograph cards like this one, issued in William I. Marshall's California series, were viewed through a stereoscope and let armchair travelers in eastern cities feel they were standing in the valley. The card records how a modest inn became part of the valley's appeal for nineteenth-century tourists.
