This photochrom shows the Hotel Bellevue in Bern, Switzerland, a hotel that catered to the travelers who came to see the Swiss capital and its surrounding mountains in the 1890s. The photochrom process, developed by the Swiss firm Photoglob in Zürich, reproduced a photograph as a lithograph and added color by hand, which gave these views a soft, painterly look. The Detroit Publishing Company marketed many such Swiss scenes in the United States, and this print appeared in its 1905 catalog. Hotels and their terraces were favored subjects in these travel views, since they showed the places where visitors gathered.
