Visitors to Yosemite Valley in 1870 could stay at this hotel, which the card identifies by its name, Laddeigs, and which stands out in a series otherwise devoted to the valley's cliffs and waterfalls. Yosemite had been granted to California as a state park in 1864, and by the late 1860s a steady stream of tourists was reaching the valley by horseback and stagecoach. Lodging like this made the trip possible, and photographers such as Thum M. (Mandeville) sold stereo cards of such places to people who would never see the valley in person. Stereoscopic views like this one were viewed through a special lens to create a three-dimensional image.
