Set in the Feldberg area, the highest peak in the Black Forest, this hotel stood in an upland district of Baden that drew walkers and summer visitors. The print is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland in the late 1880s that built color from several stone lithographs laid over a photographic base, which gives it the saturated greens and warm tones typical of the medium. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held American rights to photochrom views, issued this example in its 1905 catalog of German scenes, so it shows how European landscapes and resorts were marketed to American buyers around 1900.
