Badersee, a small lake in Upper Bavaria, is the setting here, with a hotel standing on its shore. The image was made by the photochrom process, a color method developed in Switzerland in the 1890s that turned photographs into soft, painterly color prints. The Detroit Publishing Co. sold these Swiss prints in America, and this example is listed as number 17139 in its 1905 catalog of German views. Scenes like this, with a hotel beside a mountain lake, show how travelers were already drawn to the region's resorts at the turn of the century.
