Along the western shore of the Alster lake in Hamburg, the arcades and the Hotel St. Petersburg form a covered promenade where strollers and diners could sit by the water. This photochrom print, dating from roughly 1890 to 1900, shows the building and its arches in soft, hand-tinted color. Photochrom prints were made by a Swiss process that transferred photographs onto stone lithographic plates, one per color, and the Detroit Publishing Co. sold this view in its 1905 catalog of German scenes.
