Norderney's "Grosses Logirhaus," or large lodging house, and the spa garden beside it make this view distinct from the many island scenes in the Photochrom series. Norderney, one of the East Frisian islands off Germany's North Sea coast, grew into a bathing resort in the late 1700s, and by the 1890s its hotels and promenades drew steady numbers of visitors seeking sea air and treatments. The Photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, produced vivid color prints from photographs, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold these German views to American buyers, making them a window onto European holiday life at the turn of the century.
