Taken from Cap of Liberty, this view looks down on Little Yosemite Valley, the upland meadow along the Merced River above Nevada Fall, which tourists of the 1870s reached only by a rough trail. The card is one of a numbered series on the Yosemite Valley, and its notice of copyright registration in 1870 shows it was prepared for sale soon after the valley's scenery had become widely known. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical photographs merge into a single image with depth, letting the granite walls and meadow seem to recede into the distance.
