The record places this view at 4,060 feet above sea level, labeling it as seen from the Mariposa Trail, one of the routes that brought early visitors down into Yosemite Valley. Photographed in 1870, it is number 1186 in a series of Yosemite views issued by the publisher William I. Marshall, and it survives as an albumen print mounted on a stereo card. Such cards were viewed through a stereoscope, which fused the two slightly offset images into a single three-dimensional scene. Yosemite had been set aside by Congress as a protected grant in 1864, and in the years after, its granite walls and waterfalls drew growing numbers of tourists, who bought views like this one as souvenirs.
