The card's title places the viewer at about 4,060 feet above sea level on the Mariposa Trail, one of the routes that brought travelers down into Yosemite Valley. Published in 1870, it belongs to a numbered series of Yosemite views issued by the publisher William Isaac Marshall. Its albumen print was mounted on card and meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset images into a single three-dimensional scene. Stereoviews like this one introduced many Americans to the valley's granite walls and waterfalls well before most of them ever visited.
