Yosemite Valley seen from the Mariposa Trail just after a June snowstorm sets this stereograph apart from the valley views that dominate its series. It is one of the Yosemite views in a set of California stereocards issued in 1870 by the publisher William Isaac Marshall, who sold these paired images for viewing through a stereoscope. Albumen prints like this one were the standard medium of the era, and the cards gave armchair viewers in the East a three-dimensional sense of a landscape most would never see in person. The snow on the valley walls and the mountain approach make the scene worth looking at closely.
